Vitamin D and Weight Loss

Vitamin D and Weight Loss

Have you ever heard that vitamin D can help you lose weight?   Have you ever been told you should take a vitamin D supplement or that you have vitamin D deficiency?  If so, you NEED to read this!

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is needed for strong and healthy bones, but it also can reduce inflammation and supports your immune system.  Vitamin D can even contribute to the prevention of colon, prostate and breast cancer!  Vitamin D is made in the body after sun exposure and it is available in a few foods and in supplement form.

Can vitamin D help you lose weight?

Although there aren’t strong studies showing that taking a vitamin D supplement directly helps you lose weight, it may help indirectly.  One of the symptoms of vitamin D deficiency is fatigue.  Feeling tired makes it more challenging to participate in healthy activities like exercise and can make it harder to have the motivation to cook or plan your meals.  So, if you have vitamin D deficiency, taking a vitamin D supplement and improving your vitamin D status, may, indirectly, help you lose weight!  With more energy, you may find it easier to kick some old, bad habits and start some new, healthier ones!

Have you ever been told you should take a vitamin D supplement or that you have vitamin D deficiency?

People in the Midwest are more likely to have a vitamin D deficiencies because of inadequate sun exposure.  If you do, it is very important to improve your vitamin D status by taking a vitamin D supplement, but not all supplements are created equally.  Vitamin D3 is what you should be taking to increase your serum vitamin D (or the vitamin D levels in your blood), but it is also important to take supplements that actually work.  Unfortunately, some supplements are a complete waste of money!  It’s important that you choose a reliable brand that contains high quality vitamin D at the correct dosage.

At Olivera Weight Loss we offer high-dose, prescription strength vitamin D for our patients with vitamin D deficiencies, and a lower dose, chewable vitamin D for patients who need to increase their vitamin D levels, but are not deficient.  The brands we carry in our clinics are reliable, safe and very effective.  We would be happy to tell you more about the supplements we carry at your next visit.

If you don’t know your vitamin D status, we recommend having it tested.  A simple blood draw and serum vitamin D test will tell you your vitamin D status.  Our experienced staff is happy to provide recommendations based on your results.
