There are few things that work for everyone when it comes to weight loss. Your preferences, lifestyle, job and family may all significantly influence your success in losing weight, but there is one thing that you can always do, in any situation.
Ask yourself this question: Are you physically hungry?
Not only ask yourself that question, but really think about the answer. Pay attention to the cues your body is giving you – are you physically hungry, or do you just have a desire to eat. Frequently, a desire to eat is strong enough that it can be challenging to distinguish between physical hunger and emotional hunger or a desire to eat. If you are struggling with this, try this question: Would you eat an apple right now?
If the answer is no, take a moment with yourself to acknowledge that. Consider whether or not you need or want to eat that food, if it will help or hinder you in reaching your goals and then make a conscious decision whether or not you are going to eat it. This is something that is important for everyone to consider. It brings you to being more mindful of your choices, and very often helps people eat less. This is especially true if you avoid eating when you aren’t physically hungry.
This strategy is a building block to Mindful Eating, also known as Intuitive Eating. It serves as a step toward listening to hunger and fullness cues and through gaining a greater appreciation and respect for the cues, you can lose more weight.
